Specifically, the first column has 1 card, the second column has 2 cards and so on until the seventh column, which has 7 cards. The tableau is the group of cards with the seven columns, with the last card of each column turned facing up, and with each column having an additional card. Cards from the stock pile can also be placed in the tableau. If your second card is a 2 of Spades from the stock pile, you can then place that on top of the Ace of Spades in the foundation. For example, if you happen to have an Ace of Spades as the first card turned over from your stockpile, you can place that card on the foundation pile for Spades. Cards can be moved directly to the foundation if they are in the correct order. These cards can either go into the foundation or the tableau, the area where the cards are laid out in a staircase fashion below the stockpile. Each card is removed from the stockpile one at a time, or three at a time, depending on if you are playing Turn 1 or Turn 3. On the top left, you’ll see a stack of cards. You move cards into the foundation by dispensing cards from the stock pile and sequencing all cards in the tableau. Each pile represents a different suit and should be filled in order, starting with the Ace all the way to the King. These are the four empty areas at the top of the game. To win, you want to place all the cards in the four foundation piles. When you hear the game Solitaire, in general it refers to Klondike Solitaire. Klondike Solitaire refers to the classic version of solitaire. Use hints and undos, and customize your game experience.

Roblox also groups games into four age-based categories to indicate appropriateness: All Ages, 9+, 13+, and 17+. The main purpose of Roblox is for kids to have fun, but there are other benefits, including teaching kids the basics of coding, game design, and (for kids that want to try their hand at selling their creations) entrepreneurism. Because Roblox primarily consists of user-created content, the development team has integrated a variety of parental controls directly into its Account Settings, a topic further explored in the Roblox parents guide and in the Roblox FAQ. Fortunately, there are several steps you can take to maintain peace of mind while helping to make sure your kids are having fun on Roblox.įirst and foremost, make sure that your child’s registration in Roblox includes an accurate birthdate! This will enable automatic content filtering and other protections specifically designed to protect children under the age of 13. Roblox proactively monitors the content created on its platform, but with hundreds of millions of active users a month it’s essential that you stay involved with your kids’ Roblox experiences to ensure that they remain appropriate. You can imagine that, with so many active users and established creators, this can be a challenge! That said, it doesn’t change the fact that practical skills can be learned from creating and developing unique experiences on the Roblox platform. While this may be a fun goal, it’s dependent upon creating an experience or item that is purchased (with Robux) by a significant number of people. It’s also sometimes possible to make Robux – Roblox‘s in-game currency – and even real money by creating and selling content on the platform (more on Robux later). While Roblox’s millions of users are free to create and play a wide range of games, some may be inappropriate for kids. Who knows, it may even inspire a career in STEAM when they grow up! Roblox Studio’s controlled environment provides a non-threatening space in which kids can experiment, create, fail, try again, and ultimately succeed in developing a real game! Most importantly, Roblox provides a digital playground for kids who are interested in developing their own games. This is not a one-to-one comparison since video games are inherently different experiences compared to TV and movies, but most parents may be hesitant to let their younger kids watch Logan, which is rated R by the MPAA, while being perfectly fine with their kids watching Bluey, an animated series produced for kids and rated TV-Y.Īlthough likely to be too challenging for younger kids to master, Roblox Studio tools are easy for novices to learn. For example, a streaming platform like Disney+ (T for Teen) offers both Bluey and Logan. Some content may not be appropriate for all ages.” While Roblox’s millions of users are free to create and play a wide range of games, some may be inappropriate for kids. This may be the first time you notice the Content Descriptor for “Diverse Content: Discretion Advised,” which means that the app or platform in question “offers access to a variety of content. Robloxhas an ESRB-assigned rating of T for Teen, with a Content Descriptor for Diverse Content: Discretion Advised, and Interactive Elements including Users Interact and In-App Purchases. Worry no more! Here are the key things you need to know about Roblox. You, as the parent, need to know what accommodations are included in your child’s 504 plan, especially as updates and changes are made from year to year. Parents can read the regulations online or refer to the Parent and Educator Resource Guide to Section 504. To make sure your child’s 504 plan is being followed, it’s a good idea to read about Section 504 and know what your child’s rights are. The 504 plan is about what the school should do, he says, but often the responsibility to advocate for the child and make sure their educational plan is being followed falls to parents. Katz frequently attends school meetings to make sure that students with ADHD receive the support they need. Katz, a clinical psychologist in Virginia Beach, Virginia, serves on CHADD’s board of directors and professional advisory board, and is co-chair of the public policy committee. “Section 504,” says Jeffrey Katz, PhD, “is designed to meet the individual educational needs of students with disabilities, including ADHD, as adequately as the needs of students without disabilities.ĭr. “We were actually told by the resource room coordinator that they all thought these were suggestions and optional, not required.Ĭonsidering these findings, how can parents make sure their child’s 504 plan is being followed? “Teachers refuse to comply with the 504,” says a parent who participated in the survey. Parents said that many times a child’s 504 plan wasn’t followed because teachers either didn’t know what a 504 plan was or hadn’t even read the plan. Or is it? Surprisingly, in a CHADD survey on 504 plans and other accommodations, 66.4% of the parents who responded said their child’s educational plans were not being followed. The survey also revealed that often the child was left with the responsibility of having to request accommodations, even though self-advocacy can be a challenge for students who have ADHD. It’s all smooth sailing now that accommodations are in place. You’ve met with your child’s teachers and school support staff and created a 504 plan. Typefaces like Garamond, Palatino, Century Schoolbook, Georgia, Minion Pro, Cambria and Constantia are all perfectly acceptable, and they come with Microsoft Word.To my eye, Calibri looks a little too casual for the body of a thesis. Most people agree that dense chunks of printed text are easier to read if the font is serif, and examiners are likely to expect a typeface that doesn’t stray too far from the standard. Don’t use Calibri, or any other sans serif font, for your body text, though it is fine for headings.I’m not a typographical expert, but I have the following suggestions. If you do have the luxury of choice (your university doesn’t insist you use Times New Roman, and you have defined document styles that are easy to modify, and there’s enough time left before the submission deadline) then I think it is worth considering what other typefaces might work well with your thesis. Secondly, some people intensely dislike TNR because they think it has been overused, and regard it as the font you choose when you are not choosing a font. Originally designed for The Times in London, its characters are slightly narrowed, so that more of them can be squished into a newspaper column. Times New Roman is ubiquitous and familiar, which means it is probably the safest option, but it does have a couple of drawbacks. You would like your examiners to feel as comfortable as possible while their eyes are traversing the many, many pages of your thesis, so maximising legibility and readability is a good idea. The other problem with choosing a sans serif for your body text is that if you want passages in italics (for example, lengthy participant quotes) often this will be displayed as slanted letters, rather than as a true italic font. Lacking the little projecting bits (serifs) at the end of characters makes Calibri and its many friends, such as Arial, Helvetica and Verdana, look smoother and clearer on a screen, but generally makes them less readable than a serif typeface when used for printed text. With the release of Office 2007, the default became a sans serif typeface called Calibri. For many years, it was the default body text for Microsoft Word. Times New Roman is the standard choice for academic documents, and the thesis preparation guidelines of some universities stipulate its use. Just bear in mind that there is no need to immerse yourself so deeply in the topic that you start quibbling about whether it’s a font or a typeface that you are choosing. But as someone who edits theses for a living, I think a bit of time spent on fonts is part of the process of buffing and polishing what is, after all, one of the most important documents you will ever produce. Her website is Īrguably, this question is a classic time waster and the student who poses it should be told to just get on with writing up their research. She occasionally teaches academic writing at the University of New England and often edits academic theses, articles and reports.
